It is a legally binding contract. Hence the fact that when you get divorced, you have to go to court to get it dissolved.

A marriage license allows a couple permission to get married.
A marriage certificate is proof of the marriage.
There is no contract in the legal sense, with either the license or the certificate.
A commitment to each other, a verbal bond on the personal level is the contract but the word "contract" seems to be cold and minimizes the whole wonderful meaning behind what a marriage represents to me.

No. A marriage license is simply a document stating that you are ALLOWED to get married, and unless the marriage ceremony takes place, it means nothing! A marriage certificate, on the other hand, evidences the legally binding contract that the husband and wife have entered into by taking their vows.

No.

You have no obligation to continue a marriage at any point, and can leave for a reason as arbitrary as "My psychic told me to get a fresh start."

All joking aside (but not really). No-fault divorce is a double-edged sword that sunders abusive marriages just as easily as ones with minor resolvable differences.
