I’m a senior in college, and the good news is I will be graduating in May! The bad news is, for as long as I can remember, I had a goal set for myself that I would get a teacher’s certificate in college, and of course things got in the way and I failed to do that. By the way, my major is German and I want to be a language teacher. I’ve been searching various want ads for a teacher, but they all require a teacher’s certificate (thanks in part to the No Child Left Behind Act). I was hoping to get a provisional license and then get certified while teaching, but I don’t know if they offer that route anymore. So, I wonder how I should punish myself, because I’ll pay dearly for this. I’ll probably end up in the “unemployed and living with my parents” category, all because I didn’t meet my life-long goal that would have gotten me a teaching job. I thought about beating myself up (which I’ve tried a little) or stabbing myself in a NON-vital organ, but I really don’t want too much pain. Suicide, while tempting, is not really an option either, because my family loves me way too much. But I’m so MAD and REGRETFUL at myself about this! WAS SOLL ICH DENN TUN?? If anyone is in a similar boat, how have you dealt with it?

The greastest ememy is yourself. You need to get over it and try again. Killing yourself or beating yourself up about is really stupid. You still have time to go back and try for your goal. It would be really stupid for you to kill yourself or hurt yourself over this. It's a little thing. You need to just get over it and move on. Don't beat yourself up about it. If you want to achieve your goal then go back and do it. Stop being a baby about it and be mature about this. If you really want people to believe your an adult then be mature about this. You can fix this all you have to do is go back and try again.

I went to college for four years - and DIDN'T graduate - so you are better off than me. I was a theatre major - and I never took anything except art, dance, theatre, psychology - and anything I thought I could get an A or B in. It was years ago - and I avoided my counselor and signed my own registration slips. Very stupid. My punishment was that I worked retail for about 6 years. Ugh!
Maybe you won't be able to teach German (good grief the odds of that are slim anyway) - but you can probably go to work as a substitue teacher. If you want to punish yourself - sign up at the middle schools!!! ; >) In some states all you need is a college degree (of any sort). In other states - you'll have to take the C-Best test.
Get a job doing whatever and then go back to school at night to do what you have to do. That's what I did. It took 7 years to get a two year degree - but I did it - and I landed a job that pays well and I use what I learned in school.

Dude - if this is a serious question (your options of punishing yourself), calm down. What, you are 22? You have plenty of time to go and get a teaching certificate. So do that... Maybe you can work as a teachers assistant while you get the certificate so you can put the experience on a resume. And suicide over something like this... if you are indeed serious about the self-mutilating acts you wish to do to yourself, you have more problems than the lack of teachers certificate... you might want to see a psychologist to discuss these feelings and resolve them...you don't want to work with kids with those thoughts rolling around your head. good luck!

Oh for GAWD'S sake grow UP! So you made mistake. Apply to a faculty of education and suck it up, your life isn't going to end because you didn't get your teacher's certificate right out of college. Good GAWD MATURE adults go back and get teaching certificates all the time with many years away from school. I think that's what you need to do, work for about ten years til you actually mature and stop acting like a spoiled child.
Trust me kid , in the global economy you're gonna have about 5 different careers.
As for the degree in German, why not try to work Chrysler or Google or Yahoo as a german translator.
Quit catastrophizing you're showing you're still a kid desite graduating from college.

Do not self destruct!!! When you fall , you get up dust yourself off, and keep on going. It is time to try again, for you, and this is not punishment of any kind. Try Part time work and start working on your teachers certificate. Look into Substitute Teaching, See a counselor at the University for help to achieve what you want to do. Keep on trying and with your mind open to work that you can do, to be able to support yourself. There is no need for you to be unemployed and living with your parents. Seek help and you will find it. Can you assist in Foreign language:German at the University? Keep on looking for an open door.Post a question what kind of oportunities are open , with the Degree .... then list the degree you will have in May Grus Gott (diphtong?)

You have concluded that bad is coming. Perhaps you should wait. I never went to college, never got a and degrees.
Today I have a real estate valued at $450,000 and a very comfortable life. When I left High School and had $100 in the bank, I did not know what I was going to do. I lived one day at a time, saved my money, invested in those things I needed for living, waited for opportunities to come my way.
Opportunities have not come yet, I am still waiting. If you want to see a rosy path forward, remember it is a lie, a trap,or a set-up. You have more to work with than I, an employer will hire you as an "entrance marketing associate", before they hire me.
This is an entrance level and the company will train you. The pay start at $28K minimum to $32K.
Please recommend me for the job, feel free to cut your throat. (SMILE)

My god you need help if you are serious. Life is not over for you and why would you hinder your health just because you think you have failed at a goal. Why not just stay in school get your cert next year. Get a job and work at night. I kids worked for to years as a teachers helper before they landed a teachers job. You are actually mentally disturbed and i hope you get help as I would not want you to be teaching my kids anything in school.. Get help
