http://www.limewire.com/ is the most used free file sharing site. make sure you have anti virus running before swapping any files. the free edition of avg available from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ does a good job. once you have installed limewire do a search for limewire pro. then install this and delete the original. pro is faster.
OR

This question is so boring, it gets asked 100000,0000,0000 times a day, I can't get over how many people still ask this. Limewire.com, download the basic (free) version and install it. Once installed search limewire for "limewire pro" and download and install that, get rid of the basic (FREE) version and there you have it-unlimited FREE music, videos, xxx, and anything else people share nowadays

Lets look at this practically.

If you place a value on your time, as you would in your working life, it always works out cheaper to use ITunes.

You pay a nominal amount to download a full, complete, volume-normalised album, instead of spending hours downloading fake / incomplete / too loud / too quiet / poor quality / etc etc etc songs.

Also, lets not forget that downloading copywrited stuff is stupid, illegal and drives up prices for those of us who do pay their way.

Search on google for unsigned bands and their music - which is occasionally excellent and usually free and legal.
