It would help to know what kind of puffer you were interested in. There are puffers for fresh water (dwarf puffer, South American puffer), brackish water (green spotted puffer, figure-eight puffer), and salt water (valentine, dog-faced, porcupine, etc.). Any GOOD local petshop should be able to order one for you if they don't have them in stock, but I would try to find a store that has at least a few saltwater tanks if you're looking for a brackish or marine species. They would be better able to set up a proper holding tank for it until you can pick it up. Here's some infor on the different species of puffers and their care:

Ya, but I don't think the store is still around after the hurricane. Anyways, they had a big puffer fish. I know it didn't act like a normal fish,it moved it's tail like a dog and move it's fin, like it was saying hi. It even showed off and did spins and it would come back around and it was smiling. I was completely suprised. If you have a extrememly big tank get this type of puffer that acts like a dog (they'll know the type)

i don't know where you live, but i would like to suggest you get figure 8 puffers as they have a limited size. some puffers can grow up 18" long.

well i live in florida and in the mall they have a petstore and the name of it is pet land they have fresh water ones and they are pretty small but if your looking for salt water ones then go catch 1 lol and yes the little 1s do puff up but they are pretty aggressive so only put them with other agressive fish in your tank =]
