All of the above answers are right -- non-fiction books are about real things. BUT, there are some made-up stories in the non-fiction. In the 300's in the dewey decimal system, you'll find folk tales and fairy tales.

Fiction is a creation from the mind of the author. Non-fiction is not only fact, but also conjecture, as in opinions of the author. Fiction is usually a story, whereas non-fiction deals with reality in whatever fashion.

Fiction is not true. Non Fiction is. I know, it seems backwards, but that's the way it works in Dewey Decimal land!

Think of it as "a work of fiction" is something that is made up. So if it's non-fiction, it's not made up, it's true.

The non fiction books in a library are those in the numbered section, like the 500's are science, etc.

Fiction books are listed by author's last name.

fiction is not really it's been a made up but sometimes people put it in a story line to make the nonfiction thing like a fiction. Nonfiction is usually true.

Assuming we are not talking the New York Times here, Fiction is made up, non-fiction is fact and/or commentary on fact.
