Put the equation in slope-intercept form by solving for y:

5y = 10x - 15

y = 2x - 3

The slope is the coefficient of x, 2.

The slope is the change in y divided by the change in x.
5y - 10x = -15 (first add 10x to both sides)
5y = 10x - 15 (next divide all terms by 5)
y = 2x -3

This last equation is written in the y = mx+b form, with m being the slope. The slope is therefore 2.

to find the slope a , we have to write the linear equation in the following form: y=ax+b
5y-10x=-15
====> 5y=10x-15
====>y=10/5 x - 15/5
====>y=2x-3
====>y=ax+b
therefore, slope is the coefficient of x is a=2

First: rewrite the equation in the slope-intercept form...

y = mx + b

Sec: add "10x" to both sides....

5y - 10x + 10x = 10x - 15
5y = 10x - 15

Third: isolate "y" on one side by itself > divide everything by 5...

5y/5 = 10x/5 - 15/5
y = 10x/5 - 15/5
y = 2x - 3

The slope is a whole number/fraction beside the x-variable. In this case, the slope is 2.

slope is the same as gradient.
a)first put the equation in form y=mx+c(which is a general equation for a linear graph m=gradient c=y-intercept)
so
5y-10x=-15
5y =-15 -10x
y = -3 -2x

since the coeffiecent of x is the gradient then -2 is the gradient for this particular equation.

The general linear equation is y = mx + b; where m = slope, b = y intercept when x = 0.

From that you can see how 5y - 10x = -15 can yield m = 2 from inspection. Just to test you further, what's the intercept (b)?

Put in standard form: 5y=10x-15, then divide thru by 5 ;
y=2x-3, and your slope is always the coefficient of x, so your slope is 2

2007-01-20 02:48:39 · answer #9 · answered by lynn y 3 · 0 0

Add 10x from both sides:
5y=10x-15

Divide 5 from both sides:
y=2x-3

Since this equation is in slope-intercept form,y=mx+b, the slope is m, so the slope equals 2. I hope this helps!
