1'st version came in'58 as a 348ci. and was nicknamed the "W" engine because of the radical shape of the valve covers-(shaped like stretched "W's). In '60 this engine was maximized to displace 409ci's. Chevy pusued this engine development program because Ford wanted to dominate the drag scene with brutal indifference. 406ci. Galaxy's shocked ,and ruled. the strips at a time when Chevy blinked. Chevy pushed through this humilliating time in equally shocking fashion by subsequently dominating the strips with it's 435hp "409" for the next 2 years. "409's were cancelled in'64 and some leftovers were placed in '65 cars and trucks. The new 396 rat motor took over from there and is currently available now as a 502+.

Chevy introduced the 348 in 2958 and this evolved onto the 409 around 1959-1960. It was factory installed in the 1960 SS Impala

the 409 was an early style v8,with the same design as the 348cid,and the last year of 409 was definitely 1965,I'm not sure of the 1st year.I have an old junkyard cross reference book somewhere,if I can find it I'll post it Monday.
