You are right , he is known mostly for the guitar.
The lyrics were coming from a stoned,
woman chasing, man just trying to make as
much money as he can. But the thing about
Hendrix was he never tried to pretend to be
anything but a great guitar player. The lyrics
came from his life, from his soul. They didn't
have to be poetry, hell they didn't even have to
be pretty. They just had to touch people the way
they were touching him. He connected with
people on a level that is hard to explain, if you're
not on it. (Pun Intended)
If you can feel it, you have lived it. Special, I don't know.
The word unique comes to mind. Just different,
but always remembered. We're still listening...........

kinda imposible to do as music is so personal and emotive that what one person thinks is brilliant, another thinks is poo. there is no question that as a guitarist nobody can deny that he was possibly the greatest, there ever has been or ever will be. stands to reason with that much talent he would be able to knock up a decent lyric or two.
in my mind, the lyrics of songs like foxy lady, the wind crys mary, manic depression etc, fit so perfectly into the music, that there is no question that he was also a brilliant lyricist. the lyrics of fire, while not particularly poetic, are telling a story about an incident so simple, and yet telling the story so brilliantly.
Bottom line is what does it mean to you. the man will always be the greatest to me. end of.

You are right I also make the association of guitar playing to jimi hendrix, on the whole though I do love the lyrics to Hey Joe-not for any reason other than i relate it to a period of my life, and chose to name my son joe as aa result.

He was extremely talented...back in those days most of us were too stoned to read much less understand all the words sometimes, but no-one could play a riff like he could! It was about the music, the waves of sound that washed over everyone's psychedelic chemically enhanced little brain cells or what was left of them!

To name but a few:
Manic depression
May this be love
Personal fave: The wind cries Mary:
After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footsteps dressed in red
Genius.

His lyrics were amazing. My favourite is 'Bold as Love'...
Anger, he smiles,
towering in shiny metallic purple armour
Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him
Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground
Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted,
They quietly understand
Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready,
But wonder why the fight is on
But they're all bold as love, yeah, they're all bold as love
Yeah, they're all bold as love
Just ask the axis
My red is so confident that he flashes trophies of war,
and ribbons of euphoria
Orange is young, full of daring,
But very unsteady for the first go round
My yellow in this case is not so mellow
In fact I'm trying to say it's frigthened like me
And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from, eh,
Giving my life to a rainbow like you
But, I'm eh, yeah, I'm bold as love
Yeah, yeah
Well I'm bold, bold as love (hear me talking, girl)
I'm bold as love
Just ask the axis (he knows everything)
Yeah,
yeah,
yeah!
Whether or not they were written on acid (and let's face it, there's a good chance they were), I don't care - he was a true poet.

In truth I am not much of a fan, I am sure his songs match his playing however I sometimes think people follow certain people because it is felt trendy, rather like buying a pair of Levi's because of the label. For example jazz fans rave over Mile Davis and sure his work was good but was he the best jazz trumpeter going..I think not and Hendrix for me sits in that same category.

I have never thought about it. Rock songs are not written for reading, but for listening, so I'd say that he is not better nor worst than other lyricist. He is No 1, and that's it.

Love or Confusion from Are You Experienced. Also Manic Depression is a favourite example of his lyrical brilliance.
