There is not a lot here to give a very definite identification of egg or bird. But I would guess that your bird was a Gray Catbird. They are fairly large (about the size of a Cardinal or a Mockingbird) and have dark shiny bluish eggs. They are not nocturnal birds but can be seen flying at night and heard singing after dark.
