some people would call it a hobby, as it is strangely addictive, and it is always on the news and media, so it could be classed as obsolete, but, some people watch it as a little entertainment after and before work so i will have to say your question is one of many answers,

'Entertainment'.......

Is that what it was supposed to be....?

In the 1700's it was the fashionable thing to do where one went out on a Sunday to 'Bedlam' to view the inmates. One could stroll through the building and watch their antics ...for a modest fee.

'Bedlam' was the forerunner to today's psychiatric hospitals, though then it was basically a place where the loonies, nutters, the mad, downright Mad and both the DANGEROUS and eccentrics were 'locked away' for the safety of society.

Seems like the Same Difference really. It's just that you don't have to leave home to see the poor souls being tormented.

Sash.
