Torture had already died out by Victorian times. It was practised most in Tudor times, and there were torture chambers under the White Tower in the Tower of London; there were facilities for torture in other Towers - but I can't find any pictures of them. Stories of innumerable prisoners suffering in deep dungeons and torture chambers are exaggerated. Many English (and other) castles had their own dungeons and torture chambers, but they all dated from well before Victorian times.

However, the jails were not nice places to be in the 19th century: overcrowded, dirty and rife with disease; when your penalty was death, it probably would have been torture enough waiting for it. Hanging was the way of execution in Victorian times. I append some information about well-known London prisons, and pictures.
