I currently have a pentium 4 processor. I know that I can buy a core 2 duo processor at Best Buy. I want to know if I can take out my current processor and put it in its place. (or do i need a new motherboard and all that other hardware to do that). Thanks.....

you will need to change the motherboard , but you can do with the old memory (RAM) only if it compatible with your new motherboard . But i recomend you to change both for better performance , also if you change your motherboard you have to reinstall the operating system . All other previous things like hdd , floppy drive , optical drives , will work .
please note that you may need to change the power supply in the cabinet (smps) , if it is not compatible with new mb --- but only in rare case .

you're gonna need a new mobo that runs at least a 965 chipset (or the nforce 650i chipset)

if you plan to get a new board you should make sure it supports the 1333fsb so you can upgrade to the core 2 quad-core if you ever want to

speaking of which, since the quad-core is now available the duo should drop in price in a few months....might want to hold out a bit

Most P4 motherboards will not support the architecture of chips that were manufactured after that model came out.

Because the processor is sodered to the motherboard you may need to replace both. I would recommend you asking a professional.

You will need a new motherboard and memory. Everything else should be OK (hard drive, CD rom, etc)

Unlikely it would work.
