Philosophy literally means the love of knowing. Basically, philosophy is the way you see and understand something, and the process you go through to see it that way.

There are a thousand schools of thought, and they are interesting to study; but the first step to being philosophical is to ask yourself "why do I feel the way I do?". "What makes me so right?" "What if I am wrong?" "How do I know if I am wrong?"

The ultimate in philosophical questions is "how do I know I exist?". There have been many famous answers to that one (I bet you know one of them right now); the question is what is your answer?

I hope that helps.

Philosophy is a dead subject - don't waste your time with it. It was superceded by the natural sciences (esp. Physics) in the 19th century. Nietzsche and Wittgenstein finally brought philosophy to a close in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As Wittgenstein said: ''there are problems of mathematics, of science, of ethics, of language, but there are no strictly philosophical questions or problems''.

Philosophical problems arose from a misunderstanding and misuse of language, and Wittgenstein unravelled that, and in his words ''showed the fly the way out of the fly bottle''.

Don't try and fly back in! :)

the joke goes that philosophers spend all their time trying- and failing- to prove they exist (Rubbish I know!)

You can't conclusively prove anything. You can only have faith, just depends what you put your faith in, whether unreliable things like yourself, family, friends, stuff in general- or something reliable- in other words God.
