I drive a '99 Ford Mercury Cougar, automatic, and the transmission everytime I push the gas down even slightly hard then my transmissions gears slip, like it shoves it into gear, but when you go light on it then it seems to shift fine..

What all could make it do this and how much would costs/repairs be on the things that could make it do this?

They told me my transmission fluid was full yesterday though?

How much is a filter for the transmission though? I thought when they drained the fluid and put a new one on there, you also have to replace the gasket that goes on there as well? So in price range what am I looking at here to have the fluid changed completely, a new filter put on and the gasket thing?

Those who are advising to replace the transmission filter obviously don't know what they are talking about. The CD4E transaxle in your '99 Cougar can only be serviced by draining and refilling. To access the filter inside the transaxle would require removal, and disassembly of the case halves to access. I know that sounds stupid, but that's just the way the transaxle is set up. The only common problem I've seen with these particular transaxles, is the servo cover for the intermediate/overdrive band, that can serviced externally. They do have a tendency to leak. The repair is to replace the servo cover itself, if it's leaking, and drain/fill the transmission with a fresh supply of Dexron III. Make sure to have this done by either the Ford dealer, or someone who is familiar with these transaxles. There is too much potential for extremely costly error, if done by someone inexperienced. Hope this helps. E-mail me if you require further info.

The most common cause is low tranny fluid ($5 for more fluid). Of course, at that point, you probably also have a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed.

At that age, your tranny might also need a fluid flush w/ filter change. Do NOT have this done at your local oil change place! Do NOT have this done at the local tranny shop, unless you know that they are very reputable (they are notorious for wanting to rebuild every tranny that comes in their door). DO go to a REPUTABLE Ford dealership or REPUTABLE local mechanic to have this done. I'd expect to pay $150 to $200 for this.

Change the oil or fluid and filter and add a can of Trans-X cost about 150.Shoud be done about ever 60,000 miles.
