Windows Defender is an anti-spyware program. Norton Antivirus has some spyware protection, but multiple antispyware programs are recommended, as no one ASW gets everything. These are very good and free:
Spybot Search & Destroy www.safer-networking.net
Ad-Aware SE www.lavasoftusa.com
SpywareBlaster www.javacoolsoftware.com
I have tips for configuring at http://helpmemike.livejournal.com/2374.html
You should only have one active AntiVirus program.

DON'T use two programs of this type simultaneously. They will interfere with each other and really slow things down and muck things up!!!
The best combo anti all software is Panda presently. You can get a free trial on their site and afterwards buy a 1 year update type for $10.50 via http://www.pricewatch.com

Yes, they compliment each other.
Windows defender guards against malware and browser hijacking.
