Bonnie, it is never wrong to state your opinion, but the manner in which you state your opinion will make the difference. It is very easy for us to believe we have been 'judicious' and fair in our expression, when we have actually said something that insults or hurts the other person. I am quite sure you meant no insult or hurt. You must also remember that some people will take nearly any comment that isn't their own..or is contrary to what they think..as an attack on them and their thoughts. It is unfortunate, but it is the way things are sometimes.
It is not only your right to express your opinion, but it is your responsibility to stay true to yourself and your opinions. I suppose the trick is to exercise great tact in doing so.

There's nothing wrong with stating your opinion, but I've seen a lot of people give very vicious and insulting answers.
I think the people who use excessive profanity, are very insulting, or don't even answer the question, should probably be reported. For instance, I saw a question in which the questioner had requested (in the details section) "My 7-year old daughter is watching with me, so please be nice." The first answerer put in the "mother*******" expletive. That answerer is one of only two people that I've ever reported.
I personally have never been reported- I think that's cuz I'm usually tactful with my questions. The only times when I get sarcastic is when the questioner asks a very stupid or deliberately rude question. And often, when that happens, the questioner probably doesn't expect nice answers anyway.
No matter what your opinion is, you should still be respectful on YA.

It's hard to answer you without knowing more about what the violation was. I don't ever report people for stating an opinion if it is stated without profanity or threats to someone. I think we must remember that all ages are on this forum and what we write is read by children also.

Go to the Forum and have a look at how many violations are levied by the Yahoo Gestapo. According to them, everything is a violation of one sort or another. I especially love the ones that simply state you violated the guidelines. When they do that, I report them for neither a question nor an answer.

Sometimes it depends on how you phrase your answer, not just what you said. Thus far (knock on wood), I have only had one violation. I probably deserved a few more, but the questioner was obviously so whacked out they never bothered to read the answers.
Hey, it is only two points, so who cares. As long as you don't get a reputation for being a real problem, nothing more comes of it.

No, it's not wrong to state your opinion, but all of us have gotten violation notices for our opinions at one time or another. I've gotten plenty of them.
Fortunately for me, Yahoo has even started to recognize when they've made a mistake, and I've gotten my points back.
Just keep fighting the good fight. I know I will.

I've gotten quite a few violation notices.I will continue to voice my opinion as often as I can. I'm not shouting fire in a crowded movies theater or anything like that but I will not hold my voice just because it might not be what the world wants to hear.Great question by the way.

We are entitled to our own opinions and to express them as far as I'm concerned.
