cri·sis [krssiss]
(plural cri·ses [kr sz])
n

1. dangerous or worrying time: a situation or period in which things are very uncertain, difficult, or painful, especially a time when action must be taken to avoid complete disaster or breakdown.

A crisis is not getting pulled over for drunk driving. That's already a disaster. A crisis always has a way out. Once there's no way out, the situation is no longer critical, but failure. There's really no such thing as an "emotional crisis" because you are always in control of your emotions, unless you relenquish control to no one in particular. Rape, abuse, and death of a close loved one are different stories. That can be an emotional crisis.

The best way to deal with a real crisis is for there not to be a crisis. If you're the one dealing with it, you can't see it as a crisis, you've got to see it as a challenging situation that needs a plan and needs taking care of. If you remain calm, you'll probably be passive. You don't need to flip out, but you need to have a sense of urgency but keep a good head on your shoulders. Let the emotion hit when it's all over with. As soon as the problem hits, follow these steps:

1. You'll be surprised, possibly scared at first.

2. Take a deep breathe, step back, and analyze the situation.

3. Talk to as many people involved as possible, gathering points of view and information. Tell everyone it's going to be ok.

4. Gather information from outside sources if possible (i.e. internet, wise people, etc.).

5. Create a plan for dealing with each specific area of the crisis.

6. No plan is perfect. Implement the plan to the best of your abilities, while keeping a sharp eye on the reactions of others. Keep them calm and if they aren't responding well, become verbally forceful to them (i.e. "Call 911 NOW!"). Don't just tell people to do "something". Give people specific tasks. And give tasks to specific people, not just to "someone".

7. Call people in to help if you're not the best one to deal with the crisis.

8. Conclude your plan and resolve the crisis, following your own strict guidelines.

9. Remind yourself and everyone else that it's ok.

10. After the crisis is over and any impossible tasks are in someone else's hands, then relax, and let your emotions out. It's always best to accept emtions surfacing after the crisis, but directly after, not some time after.

Yes rubbing your chin and nodding is an excellent way of dealing with a crisis. I also find that having a puzzled look on your face and shaking your head also works, although quite similar actions they do have different effects,I should know i am wise after all....I think.

Think about the worst that can happen from this crisis, and what the consequences may be. DO NOT exaggerate your fears. Once you have established a worse case scenario you can work back from there.

Many times the worst possible of cases is not all bad. I know someone who was fretting over losing her job. That did happen but she wound up with a better job a few weeks later. In her case all that worrying for ---what?

Many times people worry over things that don't happen, or things that eventually have a happy ending.

Remember - constant worrying can only make a bad situation worse. Taking positive action can make it better. Once you start to take whatever positive action you can, you will at least feel better, and be in control.

Adolus Huxley (sp?) once said; It is not WHAT you experience in life, but HOW you experience life.

I always think, what would Captain Janeway do in this situation? Go to red alert and fire off a couple of photon torpedoes? Or offer to beam across for a chat to discuss the matter and achieve a mutually agreeable result?

I dunno what it says about me, but I'm getting through photon torpedoes at an amazing rate!!

The only thing that makes the crisis go away is to deal with by solving the cause of it.

Deep breathing, in and out, calms the body.
Then you can handle the crisis more rationally.
However, it takes two to Tango!

Don't panic! Talk it over with friends, relatives or a doctor or counsellor. Ask yourself aloud before going to sleep that night: "what should I do?", and you may well have an answer when you awaken.

Going for a pint sit and think that is much better than running round in circles.

I'm a Christian and I just trust the Lord to get me through and He always does. No crisis too great for my Lord. I just stay still and know that He is God.
