I dont know how many of you know about high school marhcing bands, but each musical section has a "captain" thats pretty much the leader. I am going out for Drumline captain next year but I am going againt this other kid, Josh. I'm not usually competitive but he is and it's starting to bring out the worst in me. How do I back down on the competitiveness but not seem like Im wimping out of the competition, or letting Josh get the upper hand on me?

The best thing for you to do is do your best. That way youwill always be happy with you. If that means you become the Drumline captain so be it. However, if not, you will know you did all you could do. You are not in comprtition with Josh , youare in competition with you. Remember leadership is a rotating position. Leaders are emerging and falling back as the group progresses toward their goal. Even tho you may not earn the title of Captian you will have your turn at "leadership". ENJOY YOUR HIGHSCHOOL YEARS AND LEARN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE.

practice, practice, practice! Make a practice schedule and stick to it. Know your competition's weaknesses and make sure they are not yours, too. Take professional lessons at the local music store. You can still talk to Josh about everything except about your intentions for trying out as the drum line captain. You know you want it, but he doesn't have to. If he doesn't know or care that you really want the captain's position, then maybe he won't practice as hard or as long as you or even goof up during the trials and then you will have the upper hand.
