When ever I lie flat my heart starts beating hard like it wants to leap out of my chest, it feels as if my whole upper body is being shaken with each beat, I feel it in my arms and back and even the tops of my thighs! It is not painful or uncomfortable but it is a bit weird and alarming! It's been going on for a few days, has anyone else had this? I have heard palpitations are normal now and again in pregnancy but I don't remember getting them to this extent in my last pregnancy. I am waiting for a midwife to call me back but I am too impatient as you can see.

I am at an early enough stage of pregnancy to still be able to lie flat on my back without endangering myself or my baby. I am only just past 5 months I have been advised the 'not on your back' rule does not apply until 32 weeks and after.

I also had really strong palpitations during each of my pregnancies and while I was breast feeding. They generally occurred after I ate and when I laid down. It freaked me out so much that I ended up going to a cardiologist where they put me on a 24 hour monitor. In my case, it was something called sinus tachycardia, which just means your heart beats quickly for some reason. They told me it was totally harmless. Knowing that it wasn't dangerous helped me to cope with it.
Hopefully your midwife will have some answers. Otherwise you might want to see a doctor, just in case.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

The reason that you are not supposed to lay on your back during pregnancy is because the extra weight puts pressure on some large blood vessels in the body and restricts the blood flow. Add the increased fluid that the body has to contend with and it is little wonder your heart races when you lay down. To correct that is relatively easy, when you first get into bed, try to stay on your side (left is best) until you fall asleep, if you like to sleep on your back you will most likely roll onto your back as soon as you are really relaxed and about to fall asleep, this is not catastrophic, your heart and lungs will probably be working so slowly that you won't have the same problem. Try to remember to stay on your side as much as possible, especially on your left side as your pregnancy progresses. Some women find that they can't get comfortable in a bed, recliners are a favorite sleeping area for many pregnant women.

I had the same thing happen to me last night. But I didn't know I was pregnant until the emergency room took blood and came back and said that I was pregnant. My pulse went up to 146 for a minute while I was lying down and it slowly decreased to it's normal . I was scared out of my mind ! My heart felt as if it was gonna jump out my chest and that the beats were uneven. There was no pain though. The ER doctor told me that pregnancy can cause palpitations but he did want me to follow up with a cardiologist for just in case. He said they will tell me to wear a 24 hour holster just to make sure. I would advice for you to maybe just get it checked out anyway, just to be safe. I am also hypothyroid but my levels were ok.

well i'm not sure about palpitations, but when i would lie on my back when i was pregnant i became very uncomfortable (even nauseous!) and could here my heart beat (feel my pulse) in my head and my arms and such, like you described... is it only when you lay a certain way? try propping yourself with pillows and lying on your side.... may sound stupid or obvious, but sometimes we women overlook the simple things because we forget we deserve to be comfortable!! good luck to you, and congratulations!!!

you are not suppose to lay on your back when you are pregnant, you are meant to lay on your left side, this is also very good to help with heartburn,,,,,, when you lay on your back, the uterus/bubs presses on a main artery which can reduce oxygen to yourself and also bubs which is why your heart would be beating like that, i would wake up in the middle of the night, short of breath and my heart leaping out of my chest, i would just roll back onto my side, but seriously, ask your doctor, read any pregnancy book or even look it up on a pregnancy website about not laying on your back and they will say the same thing

Your not really supposed to lay flat on your back, the extra weight from your tummy puts pressure on major blood vessels. It is advised that you lay on your side. Be sure to talk to your doc about whats going on, on your next visit.
