Chalk and cheese is a comparative phrase, indicating how unalike two things are.

Pros and cons is also comparative. The "pros" indicate things that favor the subject matter. "Cons" are indicatative of things that show the subject matter in a negative light.

Topsy-turvy is another way of saying upside down or all mixed up.

Nitty gritty is another way of saying "the essentials" or "the basics." Like saying, "bottom line" once all the fluff has been put aside.

"Cloud nine" is a descriptive phrase that shows mood or state of mind. It refers to a very pleasant, almost high feeling. Someone who's on cloud nine is extremely happy, almost to the point of looking foolish.

All of these are common English (American) expressions.

'Chalk and cheese refers to things that may look alike but are vastly different. Usually referred to people such as brothers who may appear similar but be vastly different.

Pros and Cons. Simply For and Against. When weighing up a decision you may consider the positives (pros) and negatives (cons).

Topsy turvey means to be turned upside down, bottom up.

Nitty gritty means to get to the basic details or matters of fundamental importance.

Cloud nine means to get to a high level of ecstacy or enjoyment. Probably from the process of Nirvana rweaching higher levels of conciousness represented by clouds with could one being lowest and cloud nine the highest.
