There's nothing like watching an eastern diamondback rattlesnake glide across the surface of a pond....
All snakes can swim and climb. There are several (understatement) types of snake that spend most of their lives in water, but as stated already, snakes have lungs, not gills, so they still have to come up for air, and females still need to come to shore to lay their eggs if they're egg layers..... I would assume that if it's live birth they just have to be in pretty shallow water, but oh well...

Most if not all snakes can swim, from garters to anacondas. Some sea snakes live primarily in the water, but none can live under it since they don't have gills and have only one functional lung. If trapped in water for too long many snakes can and do drown after swimming to exhaustion.

Most snakes can swim but some are better than others. However, they can't live underwater because the need to breath air and don't have gills like fish to take in oxygen.

Some snakes react violently to touching water (usually those from drier areas) and probably would not fare well in the water. Im sure they would try to swim, but I dont know how well they would. These types I would guess would most likely be suseptiable to drowning in a flood type situation.

Yes, all snakes CAN in fact swim and NO they can't live underwater, even sea snakes must periodically rise to the surface in order to breath.......
(My 12 year old is a snake fanatic and always watched Steve Irwin. I paid attention)

Most animals, period, can swim.
Snakes cannot live underwater as a fish because they do not have gills. They have lungs, like you and I do.
