I'll start of with as much details as I can think of. It is a 91 4cyc automatic Mustang. The problem is this: When I start the car in the morning I get very sluggish performance(It drove 15mph and wouldnt rev above 1500rpm for maybe 5 minutes) Then it will suddenly start these popping sounds which will lurch my car forward and i'll gain some speed with each pop/lurch.
If I start the car and let it warm up for 5-10 minutes the problem doesnt last as long as it usually does, but the pop/lurching still happens
Back in august of '06 my car started developing symptoms (sluggish acceleration, low power driving up hills) but these things happened on and off sometimes with weeks in between. I took it to a transmission place that said "Couldnt find any specific cause, we can rebuild the tranny for 1800 or replace the solenoid for 500" I chose the solenoid and it felt like nothing had changed, same symptoms as before.
And now I have these popping sounds. Any help will be greatly appreciated

a bad cam will cause your car to backfire that makes a popping sound .I had a car that did the same thing it would run real smooth till you went down the road.

Well if it only happens on acceleration and bumps can't be the motor cause if it was a spun rod bearing you would notice a slight knock at idle and worsen as you rev most likely a motor mount trans mount could even be a traction bar if on vehicle anything that can let the motor or transmission twist under acceleration

sounds to me like the tranny joint got you for 500 and they probably didn't even put one in. but anyway have a tune up done on it dist cap, rotor, spark plug wires, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, and crank case breather filterthis just might fix the problem if not have a scan for electronic fuel system done also my advice is to take it to the Ford dealer for all of it unless you personaly know a person at a garage that you can trust!

First of all, you got took on the $500. Secondly, sounds like what you have is a clogged muffler and/or catalytic converter. I suggest you take it to a muffler shop and let them look at it. 2-1 says that that is the problem.

The most common cause is lack of fuel supply to the engine.
It's either:
A) Dirty fuel filter. You will need a slip tool for removing the filter lines)
B) Low fuel pressure from pump. (worn out pump, or plugged intake sock)
