Most people called "Witches" did not choose to self-identify as witches more recently than the 1700s. There were compelling reasons to reject the term, since for the most part there was zero tolerance in Western Europe and North America and Witchcraft was still largely considered a form of heresy. As a consequence most of the historical work is not written by pagans.
These come close, being selected as they are not wicca specific histories or because they are more secular academic or include very good reference bibliographies. They are listed from least to most wiccan content.

Sociology:

"The Witch in History" by Diane Purkiss

Neo-Pagan Movement:
"Drawing down the Moon" by Margot Adler.

"The Triumph of THE MOON - A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft" by Ronald Hutton

Both of the above suggestions are great sources for information. Check them out. I hope you like them. I applaud your sincere interest in learning about witchcraft, even if you don't want to learn about Wicca.

I am a eclectic Wiccan. But I respect your desires to pursue other studies in the craft.

their is many different resources out on the wild web. but you will get lots of different opinions on the subject and lots of different definitions.
you can try goggle and type in witchcraft. or any other search engine
one good site that has lots of resources and articles is
www.witchvox.com
you can also meet other witches in your area to discuss your questions.

Wicca is witchcraft, if you want less modernized information search for "ancient pagan".

You can go to http://www.MysticWicks.com there you can find out all sorts of stuff about Pagans. There's tons of infomation. It's a pretty nice forum and the people there are very helpful.
