because they think it's corrupted or are disturbed by it. i really don't see it though, and i agree with you...it's not going to affect their lifestyles. plus same-sex marriage has so stayed the same the past hundred years and is much more meaningful [the ranks of women...britney's two-day marriage...smell the sarcasm?]
also if you are straight do not be offended...i'm straight, too; i'm addressing the intolerant, not ALL, straights. (:
[EDIT]
i am apalled at the intolerance and ignorance of people here ): i will not mention names, because that's downright rude, but honestly...i think everyone should know that homosexuality usually is NOT A CHOICE, it is something you cannot change. knowing that, replace the word 'gays'/'homos'/etc. with 'black' or 'physically disabled' or 'asian'. does it still sound right?

wow some of the people on this question have ran the gamut of reasons from gods wishes to dog marriages ....
The same reason why they stuck there negative two cents in on answering your question is the reason why they are against gay marriage --
They think there opinion is worth more than the gay couple who are in love with each other.

Because of their upbringing, cultural orientation and religion, they feel that it is immoral for people of the same sex to get married. It is really funny because I believe that legalizing gay marriage will not affect their lives in any bit, as you pointed out. Nevertheless, it is that Messiahnic complex in them that bugs them to see the need to "protect" others (the non-believers) and society based on their moral convictions. They want their children to grow up in the kind of environment that they did...which is really pathetic if you ask me.

i think for the same reasons that people (both gay and straight) are opposed to non-violence (no hitting, spanking) of children,,,,,,,, they dont want to review what they have been taught, for some reason they feel the world will fall apart if new ways of thinking and being and accepting are taken up,,,,,, its so much easier to just go with the way things have been,,,,,,, and to isolate people because of labels,,,,,, gays from marriage,,,, children for violence ,,,, etc so they say marriage is only for straights,,,,,, assault is only against adults,,,,,

Some people are afraid to let go of any power they have over any other group of people. It's like Hitler and the Jews, except there isn't any mass genocide. It's like where it was in the earlier stages.

The statistics are showing us a really bad picture:
Almost 50% of marriages end up in divorce.
Male gay relationships are most often short term.
By allowing gay marriages, the divorces will make less than 50% of marriages successful.
The institution of marriage is functioning, because people believe in it. If gay people start marrying, then many straight people will loose faith in regular marriages.
The institution of marriage is a functional institution. It is created in order for two people to create a stable environment for the members of the next generation. While I'm not against gay adoptions, they are relatively rare compared to all gay "unions" so they do not necessarily require it to be a marriage. A civil union, with all the rights of marriages is enough for them. Anything less is unfair, and more is too much.
I'm not a homophobe, I know gay people, I'm not repulsed by them, my logic is purely based on functionality.

More than half of all people in the United States oppose gay marriage, even though three fourths are otherwise supportive of gay rights. This means that many of the same people who are even passionately in favor of gay rights oppose gays on this one issue.
It's because there is a lot of misunderstanding about what homosexuality really is, as well as the erroneous assumption that gay people enjoy the same civil rights protections as everyone else.
There are also a lot of stereotypes about gay relationships, and even a great deal of misunderstanding of what marriage itself is all about and what its purpose is.
Many of the reasons offered for opposing gay marriage are based on the assumption that gays have a choice in who they can feel attracted to, and the reality is quite different.
And yes! It is happening already, and fortunately cannot be stopped.
