James Hutton, dude! He said that the earth was formed by the same uniform forces that are forming it now. With "no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end." In other words, the earth is really, really old. It was formed by volcanos, glaciers, rain, snow, ice, sedimentation, etc. over very long periods of time.
Hutton was a nice guy but not very articulate, so after he died a friend of his had to write a book to explain Huttons ideas. The book cam out in about 1802 and was one of the main turning points that got people thinking about modern geology. Some consider Hutton the Father of Geology.
