If there was no computer, great technological advances will still occur. It will just take much longer TIME to do. Just think of the PYRAMIDS. Up to now, we do not know exactly how they were built. This is a good case, that "OLDER" peoples are smarter than our generation of computers.
What we know are all based on the painstaking studies by people who did not have computers. People like NEWTON, GALILEO, EUCLID, etc.
So Developed? Really? We are not so developed, if you compare what little resources the Old Thinkers had to deal with to make revolutionary advances.
Yes, I wish to invent something new but I am so distracted by this YOUTUBE.COM, my IPod, my old walkman CD player, my new HDTV LCD TV, my car with GPS and Onstar, my FAX 8-1 machine--up to now I can only use 2 of the 8 options even I paid good money for it, my 4-blade(!) shaver and I cannot wait to get my hands on the new iPhone!!!! And do not forget my TV remote and my cell phone. I will just die if lose them.

The real strength of computers is in storing, organizing, and processing data. And these capabilities make it easier for people to do more complex tasks. I think there is a real danger that design becomes almost too easy for engineers when using some design software, and engineers who don't really have a good understanding of design principals can just run a lot of simulations until they get something that works. This is not a good way to design quality products. It is almost to the point where engineering software skills are on-par with design skills. When I went through engineering school, no-one taught us how to use the software we needed to complete projects. That was something everyone had to learn on their own. It is more than a little frustrating when you have big projects due and you have never used the software you need to complete these projects before, and are expected to have the time to both learn the software and use it to complete the project.

Actually, our technological progress has stunted our spiritual growth. Computers, like TV and ipods, etc, are being overused for entertainment, and not as the valuable tools that they were designed to be. And yes, I do wish to invent something new: a gravity control transducer to replace the automobile tire and dangerous space rocket engines.
If we're so developed, why did you say 'boom' instead of the correct 'boon'?
