All depends on the couple.. some couples get along really well almost to a spooky level of being able read each others minds.. those type of couples would have no problem doing it..
Couples that are stubborn and set in their ways would fight the moment they go away from shore..
Couples that just dont work well as a team, would make it about half way then the problems would start..
Couples that hate each other but just staying married because they think they have to , u find only one canoeing to the finish line, and another bobbing in the water , and thats only if they had a life jacket on lol..

Depends on the couple! I'm sure for the most part, many could. Just the fact that they've agreed they want to do this means they're confident that it'll go smoothly.

depends on time: is this a honeymoon couple? then maybe. otherwise, probably not.
Apropos of nothing, here's a canoe joke:
What is the similarity between sex in a canoe and a Heineken?
....
....
....
they're both f u c k i n g close to water.
Man, that was an old one.

Me and my wife are friends and partners so we would not have any problem. We would find a way to help each other make it across.
