If you don't want to pay much, then forget about iPod. Go for a Creative Zen V Plus for around $100 (the 1GB)

Apple have a refurbished store where they sell products that have been returned and if needed, repaired. Generally you get 20-30% off the retail price and all the stuff sold is under guarantee.
But it's a bit hit and miss as obviously it depends on what (if anything) had been returned. Try www.apple.com.ukstore and then click the "refurbish store" icon at the botom right of the page.
