If you are asking how long do you have to stay on the ice that depends on a lot of things. Since your question was way too open ended for most of us to figure out lets assume you mean for a hockey game. NHL hockey games are 3 periods of 20 minutes each. The average player will play between 10-30 minutes depending on his talent and ability. A 4th liner may only get 5 minutes of ice time. A marquis defenseman will play over 30 minutes of ice time. In the Juniors the time is the same. The younger the player is and the lower the level of play the more even the ice time is. For example in house league the coach has to play each player evenly no mater how good or bad he/she is. In rec hockey where people pay for ice time each player wants to play the same and "ice hogs" will be asked to leave if they don't respect this. If you mean for practice I would play until you are tired. If you have an outdoor rink that you can go on practice until you are tired and go back the next day for more. As I said I am not sure what you were striving for but I hope I have answered you.

If your question is "How long do hockey players generally stay on the ice during a shift?" then my answer is between 35 & 45 seconds. Try to keep the shifts in this time frame to have the ability to make one or two rushes into the zone and or backcheck and then make it back to the bench. This keeps players fresh and conserves energy so they can go back out in 2 or so minutes, instead of staying 2 minutes on the ice and having to rest for 5 minutes. It's the most efficient system.

I am guess you are asking how long a shift should last. A shift should last between 45 and 90 seconds. Any longer and you are not skating at full speed. If you watch NHL players they stick to this time frame most of the time.

Typical shifts in the pros, juniors and college last no longer than 1 minute. The average is probably about 45 seconds.
