There are plenty of saved restore points but each time I get an error message saying the system could not be restored and no settings have been changed. The system restore callendar will not allow me to go back more then a month.

This was my final straw that got me to switch to Ubuntu (linux)... the constant rebooting, freezing up, etc just got to me. I spent more time fixing my computer than actually using it!

My suggestion would be to try a few different restore dates, and if they don't work, download and burn Ubuntu onto disk http://ubuntu.com/ (or fill out the form at http://shipit.ubuntu.com to get it sent to you for free)

Put the CD in your computer to try Ubuntu without changing anything on your computer (it's called "LiveCD" - very handy)

Google "dual booting Ubuntu" or "installing Ubuntu with XP"

Short version: Reinstall XP and then install Ubuntu into partitions that you make using Ubuntu's CD.

It's really not as scary as you think - you're wiping your computer anyways, right? So if something gets messed up you can just rewipe.

Ubuntu is the friendliest version of Linux I've ever heard of - all types of programs that you'd normally use - office, web browser, IMing, etc are already installed!

Sounds as if someone has switched off your system restore. Once that has been done you can only go back to last restore point.

I have had the exact same problem. That side of windows is unreliable!
I would strongly advise in biting the bullet and save all your files now and reinstall the operating system.
Then you can purchase some other brands back-up software for regular back-ups!
Good luck!

Your restore point setting could be turned off.

I would try placing the xp disk and repair the os..this will give you the restore effect only if you leave your config the same if you do have reinstall it.

Earse everything and use your back up disc to re-load it all or it came with re-storation disc to use too!
