It does happen. There is some protection by the paypal. Remember some protection. It is a big problem that ebay has right now with scam artists and the like.
It really takes a lot for a buyer to watch what they are doing and protect themselves. Ebay can be a good place but you really need to watch what you are doing and to be careful.
Best bet for protection is to use your credit card. Your credit card offers way better protection then paypal.
Paypal does have buyer protection. But they too have limits and restrictions. I have seen many people get screwed by them. This doesn't always happen though. But it does and they are constantly in trouble and being sued for thier actions.
I have sold on ebay myself for over 4 years and have stopped using them. I have enjoyed having my own merchant account and being that I am a smaller company then paypal I can check for fraud a lot better. Yes people have tried. But I have a very good verification system with my card processor.
Anyway the answer is yes it does happen. As the old saying goes it's buyer beware

The same is true for any mail order business... once they've got your money it's down to honesty to send ou the goods. Well, honesty and the fact that if you pay by a credit card or paypal you've got a big friend to help you if someone decides to run off with your money and not supply the goods.

I've claimed from a Mastercard for non-delivery of goods from a shop... I've claimed from PayPal for non delivery of ebay goods. The difference is the credit card guys gave me all of the money back, PayPal had an excess that you don't get back.

That said, anyone who has been on eBay for more than a few months and has a reasonably +ve rating should be OK.

Believe me, everyone who answered this, is RIGHT. Always check the feedbacks and make sure you use PayPal...last time I ordered something via mail, never got anything and filed a claim, Ebay simply kicked them off but never got my money back. Paypal is an important service that helps keep your money insured and high secured shopping experience.

Well yes...but Ebay offers protection for that and the buyer could file a claim. Ebay could then take legal action against the seller.

Yes but only if your not smart. You have to use paypal or some way to make sure your safe. My friends sister paid $15,000 for laundry equipment in NY. When her truck driver brother went to get the stuff there was nothing there. They had sent a check. Idiots.

I purchased a cell phone from a guy a year ago, Christmas, through Paypal. He got my money, I never got the phone, and Paypal did NOT give me my money back.

I guess they could do that once or twice, but then they'd get reported and kicked off ebay and not be allowed to sell on ebay anymore.

eBay has a compensation scheme, so it shouldn't be a problem. If you pay using eBay's Paypal service, they have a compensation scheme as well.
