I suppose you could say it does, in the sense that it demonstrates that space is not "empty", but contains energy and has properties. No one calls it aether, though, probably because that word is a associated with a 19th century theory that made some specific predictions about the nature of space that were subsequently proven wrong.

No. It doesn't mean there is some matter it's traveling through. It could be a gravitational effect that we haven't figured out yet.
