there is a big difference between the MB ML SUV and the Volvo S40 sedan. I would go with the MB quality and compromise, Go for the MB B200 turbo.

All car parts nowadays are expensive, as is repair. Mercedes is a bit more than, say, a Chevy, but both will cost a good amount now.
Still, the ML is a horribly unreliable car. Still, if you must get an ML, get the ML350 over the ML320. The 3.5L engine is far better than the 3.2L engine (hence, the numbers in the name).
S40 is a tiny little sedan. It's quite different from the ML, which is a SUV.

The best source to evaluate vehicles in my opinion is JD Powers because they survey (with no bias) individuals that own the vehicles. According to the website the ML slightly out ranks the Volvo S40. Below is the website so you can look for yourself. If you were my family member, I'd tell you to look at another car with a better overall rating.

Good Luck.

Go to carsurvey.org From what I've heard since Mercedes merged with Dodge, they have cut corners too, with Chinese parts, and forced overtime at the American Plants. This makes the workers care less if something is right. Alot of complaints.I'm looking for the pre 1985 diesels. Cause they switched to aluminum heads and they crack. It takes cast iron the hold diesel compression. As for Volvo, they use timing belts, and you have to return to the dealer for software upgrades. Which cost alot.

Look in the owner's manual. Chances are, they'll specify that you should use any (that means any) motor oil that satisfies the latest API standards, which is signified by the circle or starburst on the bottle. And that's all you need to know. The brand of oil is insignificant, as long as it makes the API (that is, the American Petroleum Institute) happy. This is another way of telling you that you don't have to pay for synthetics, Pennzoil, Castrol, Wolf's Head, Quaker State, or any of the other legendary and heavily-advertised brands that have been with us for a hundred years or so. Anyone's oil is about as good as anyone elses, so buy what's on sale as long as it's the proper grade and satisfies the requirements in the owner's manual. Guys who 'swear by' Mobil 1 or Valvoline or whatever don't really have anything on which to base their loyalty.

I have a clk, and everytime a check engine goes off,I have to bring it to a mecedez dealer for them to specialize what wrong with it and the cost alone for diasnogtis is at least 180 dollars, not even talking about if there is something wrong with the engine and decide to fix it. The cost of the part, but more expensive is the labor cost, sometime is triples than the outside auto shop. But with mecedez, it is better to have it fix by it own dealership. My suggestion is if you gonna go for this car, better buy extended warranty and the good insurance go with it.
