Im getting very concerned about my 5 wk old baby. He hardly ever wakes up! He has started to rouse himself every 4- hours or so for a feed but rarely stays consious afterwards. I think it would be fair to say that he sleeps for at least 21 hours in every 24 hour period. I have been to the doctors but they dont seem to beieve that he really is this sleepy and are unconcerned because he is gaining weight.

When he doesnt wake for a feed, we have to undress him and sprinkle him with cold water just to get him semi-concious so that he'll accept his bottle.

Does anyone else have a similar problem or any advice please?

Newborns sleep a lot, but that sounds like a lot. CALL THE DOCTOR......My file of calls on my son (first baby) was huge.

They get paid and expect you to call a lot!

I guess if he has been seen by a doctor that jaundice has been ruled out. Jaundice can make babies very sleepy and they miss feedings.

I wouldn't worry too much as long as he is waking up every 4 hours or so and he is gaining weight. You will wish for these days in a few short months...lol!

good luck and if you continue to worry, don't be afraid to get second, third, fourth opinions...

My 4 week old sleeps alot also. Only at night does he want to stay up for a few hours at a time. He was premature and is still small though.

My son slept a lot too. As long as he is gaining weight, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Enjoy it while it lasts because it won't be long before you are wishing he would go to sleep.
