any points to be wary of. For instance, is there any anti-virus or anti-spam software that will not run with Firefox.

You can have both IE and Firefox on the same computer, in fact I recommend you just leave IE to rot in a corner of your computer. Some programs are written to work with IE only - Norton and others like it.
If you go into add / remove programs and then add / remove windows components, and choose to "remove" IE it just removes the file associations, not IE.

On the positive side, you'll need your antivirus and antispyware programs much less - Firefox doesn't let in what IE does!

Just switch your preference to Firefox ("default browser") and you won't even notice IE's on your computer anymore.

Oh, and make sure you have a firewall like Zonealarm to keep people out, and keep programs from connecting to the net (saves bandwidth).

Firefox is cool. So you wouldn't need to worry much about it. Visit Mozilla to install extensions in Firefox that will add cool features to it (like the NoScript).

I would have however not give my 100% to it though, as some websites still require IE, and I've seen a lot of websites that works and/or looks great only on IE (especially due to some CSS incompatibilities -- a problem that usually lies with web designers ignoring the fact that there are users out there who use a different browser). But I believe as time goes on, this incompatibilities will be next to nil. So for now, use Firefox, and if you think the site looks or feels odd, try to open also in IE just to compare, so you'll know if you're really missing something.

Firefox is an excellent choice as an alternative to IE or you might want to try Opera. Firefox supports all the usual stuff and, being open source, is updated very quickly.
