Because there's a double standard. Women are allowed to be very publicly affectionate to each other, but men are not. Like you said, two female friends can hold hands and nobody thinks twice, but if two men hold hands everyone thinks they are gay. Women can dance with each other and it's OK, but if two men dance together, they are percieved as homosexual.

I think it's because society sees men as being intensely sexual but it doesn't see women the same way. If women show affection it can be non sexual, but any male display of affection is seen as sexually based, no matter what.

It depends on your culture, and when you lived. In old England 1400 to 1500's it was acceptable for men to hold hands. In some countries, it is still acceptable for men to hold hands.

It's like in 100 to 200 AD, Christian men greeted each other with the Kiss of the Covenant. Full lip to lip kiss.

During the Crusades, Christian Knights greeted each other with a Kiss.

I don't think any Christian Preachers would accept the Kiss of the Covenant now.

It just depends on Time, Culture and place.

Why would men hold hands unless they are gay?

There are a lot of behaviors that women engage in but men don't because they don't think it's manly behavior. Just like it's "acceptable" for women to cry but not for men.

Men (animals think butting heads lions fighting) are usually the individuals of any group and territorial, whereas women stick together and raise offspring, so they dont have that aggression towards each other bred in.

It is OK for men to hold hands. They will just appear to be gay if they do whether or not they are gay.

Because girls are very friendly, sensual, and feely in that way. Men are not like that.
