Seems good for a dictator. He has been helpful in the war on terror. I was shocked to see him building buzz for his book at a joint Presidential news conference earlier this year. He has a chance to put the Kashmir mess to bed, I hope he does for the sake of world peace.

Mr. Musharraf is walking a tightrope, on the one hand he is trying to present a moderate face for Pakistan, and has actually worked in some positive ways with India etc.

However, the ISI and some other agencies inside Pakistan are not entirely under his control, and as such he may be considered a puppet by these organizations.

Since coming to power in the coup a few years ago, optimisitically he really inititally found himself in a situation where it's "possible" however unlikely he would return civilian control of the government to the Parliment etc. However, after 9/11 that was off the table.

With the reactions to terrorism being completely ham-handed so far, far too little in many instances and far too much in many other instances (rounding up innocent people on suspicions rather than charges), (methods of extracting information) etc, turning a blind eye to the most depraved treatment of prisoners is a long dark crime in any country.

Not working strenuously enough to consolidate the armed forces and work to moderate extremist elements. Handling the AQ Khan situation in quite the same way might be seen as wholey inappropriate and rather disasterous - especially if Al Qaida uses a weapon or weapons developed on AQ Khan's methods.

Ultimately, if no war between India and Pakistan occurs for another 10-15 years, or he dies in office or something (this very likely actually as there have been multiple assasination attempts), then he might be considered reasonably well and certainly no worse the President Bhutto is.
