I read Shelters of Stone along with all the rest of the books. Does it bother you that Jondalars fabulous ex was fat when he got back home? Shouldn't Ayla have at least one person that is an adequate rival spiritually and physically. I'm so sick of every man lusting after her, even the happily married ones. What do you look forward to in book 6? I hope Zelandoni loses weight and starts going after Jondalar, I hope Ranec & Durc show up together looking for Ayla. I hope

I understand what you are saying, I think....but, don't you think it would defeat the point of the series? Ayla is the archetpye of the species, in a way. She is the catalyst for new thought, new ways of doing things. It is because she is so different that she is so wanted.
I look forward to seeing her reunited with her son...and I find the whole "love affair" angle of the books tedious...but, leaving aside the Jondalar/Ayla love thing, the books are phenomenal in giving life and a sense of history to a past we can only guess at.

It's been awhile since I read it. I'll have to read it again now!

Isn't Zelandoni supposed to represent the Earth Mother, in which case, wouldn't being fat be a good thing? Whenever you see a mother goddess-type scultpure, it's very shapely with large breasts and wide hips.

I, too, hope Ayla is reunited with Durc. I've forgotten who Ranec is, though. Was he the Mammoth hunter she was promised to? Or was he the clan boy raised by the Mamotoi?

Isn't it awful having to wait such a long time between books? I'm always hoping that nothing happens to Jean Auel to prevent the next one. At least with the Harry Potter series, Rowling already wrote the all of the books.
