the experience of unconditonal love exists between a mother and her infant and the intuitive bond that exists between them so that the infant will have its needs met and have a greater chance of survival. as adults, we long for this type of unconditional love where our partner can intuitively know what are needs are and provide for them. this puts a lot of pressure on them and strains the relationship. as an adult, we have the ability to communicate our needs more directly through the use of language. if we communicate directly what we want then people do not have to guess and that avoids love by trial and error. so as adults, we cannot expect unconditonal love from our partners but we can expect to be safe in our relationships. a safe relationship is one where you can trust that you will not be lied to and will be free from exploitation, where the other does not feel superior at your expense, does not betray your confidences, or intrudes upon your boundaries.

Absolutley. Unconditional love for one's family isn't that hard, but having unconditional love for others isn't as easy, expectations mess it up. If you have no expectations you will never be disapointed & will be able to give that love.
Like the song says...
"And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make."
~ Peace ~

Of course it is! With unconditional love there is no expectation of anything in return. The act of giving is it's own reward

It seems to me that the idea of giving love is faulty. Love wants to bring people closer together and if you are giving or taking then you are keeping yourself separate from the other.
The hawaiian wisdom makes the most sense to me - "Love is being happy together" That seems the deepest love we can achieve.
My personal journey involved realising this unity of beings, and then opening my heart to the unity rather than the love, and since then my life has been filled with friends and joy...

Only if they are mentally ill. Other than that, someone would ave to stop loving someone else at some point.
Unconditional means you could kill their children, burn their house down and beat them and they would still love you.
