That is something that puzzles many also!
Time is part of the movement of space, our universe's expansion.
It is not always linear: it can be angular,
gravity does affect time, it is especially noticable around massive objects such as black holes which curves space (by "pulling" on it) so much that time is affected and slows down, this is known as dilation of time.
Time is also defined (in our universe) as how "long" it takes an object to get from point a to point b ,( ie: the formula v=d/t) velocity= distance divided by time.
And t (time) is also defined as 1/f (1 divided by frequency)
You might find Steven Hawkins's book "A brief history of time" very interesting!

Time is measured by observing synchronous events. When we say some amount of time has passed, you are observing the change in some system (clock). This clock could be mechanical, electronic, atomic, biological, geophysical, ...etc.
To observe a clock, some form of information must be conveyed between a clock system and you, otherwise you cannot know what "time" it is. To minimize delays between a clock advance and your observation of the advance, you should use the fastest signal possible. The fastest way to convey information (that we know about) is to use an electromagnetic wave (light signal).
If you are moving at "relativistic speeds" (Greater than 10% the speed of light) relative to the clock you are observing, or have very precise clocks, you will observe the moving clock will appear to run at a slower rate than an identical clock that is not moving with respect to you. See Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity for more details.
Time only "flows" in one direction because we observe that systems tend toward increasing disorder. We call this property the entropy of a system. We cannot measure the absolute entropy of a system, but we can measure its relative change. And the entropy of the ENTIRE SYSTEM can only remain constant or increase. This is the second law of thermodynamics.

I can answer only one aspect of your question and thats whether time is linear. the answer is that nothing is linear. Not even linear dimensions! That is because a straight line is a circle of infinite radius. In short time is not linear.

Time can be bent, and yes it is linear. The concept of time is an expression of length. Man made, to build a structure with which to express and explain that which affects us. Time is effected by gravity. (Mass)

sure time exists,
How?...thats something in not so sure abt
Since the past and future do not physically exist, it follows that there should be some smallest division of time (an 'instant') that represents the present. However, if time is a dimension, and is not quantized, then it can be divided into infinitesimally small frames ('instant's) whose duration tends towards 0 - in effect the present as a state does not exist.
(My opinion)

Think of of this way.
You were born and you will die.
The space between is divided equally.
Some live longer than others so more portions are added.
What to call these portions?
Doesn't matter. Call the fish fingers if you wish.
Currently I have a nearly filled bag of them, but ever greedy I hope for more.
Don't let it worry you. Just eat and be merry.

does time exist?
no, not really.
why?
Coz seconds, minutes, weeks, months & years, R man-made therefore, mankinds concept of time is of his own making.
linear?
if mankind says so.
i understand enough 2 get by.
it puzzles me 2.

Time is just a concept created by us humans to keep track of the progress of the world. In reality, there is no time. The universe is infinitely timeless and mysterious.
