Take a break...............what you can do is start an internal wall fire or the like. Running a plug in heater is usually safe & though you might be able to run to the store & back while it is heating I wouldn't recommend that. If the heater has a recall & you haven't heard about it, it could malfunction & not shut off which could overheat the 14 Gauge wires installed by a electrical contracter, or could cause a rub-through from a staple too tightly driven into a wall stud. Though you cannot tell if these are the case, a heater is designed to shut-off just a s afurnace is when it reaches it's limit set either by the manufacturer or your setting. If it does this properly you have little to worry about, if it does not you risk a potential fire.

As to your direct question, yes it is possible to burn out the element in a portable heater simply by pushing its limit & running it too long. Best to bundle up & layer clothing if you are faced with the the need for more heat than your normal source can provide. Use these portable heaters with great caution.

Heaters just as your car do break down after use,the elements can seperate, the heat sinc can go bad(keeps from overheating), you may have a loose connection,or a bad breaker.Best bet is have an electrician look at it and repair it correctly.Heaters are very hard to troubleshoot so it shouldnt be any trouble for an electrician to repair or replace.

heaters have safety switches to prevent over heating but normal wear and tear will break any thing. if you think it is over heating have it checked sometimes a relay will stick on.

Of course you can. However, if you are using heaters that do not have auto-shut off at a certain temperature, trash them and get ones that do. you are begging for a fire.

Yes, I'm sure you can, although I'm not an electrician that is common knowledge.
