Fire and vinegar. The rock was scored where it was to be cut, fired until it was red hot, then cold vinegar poured on it, causing it to split open. Wedges and hammers separated the blocks and chisels were used for the fine cutting.

Machu Piccu's stonework is not especially remarkable or spohisticated - it's the spectacular location that makes it unique.

Nysiros' old castle has existed since 7th century BC; the current walls were built in the 4th century BC of local volcanic stone in the usual manner of that time. It's a lovely place, but not unique for the area.

Same way they were cut everywhere else. With harder stones, with fire and cold water, by chipping, and rubbing, and even by using string dipped in glue and rolled in volcanic grit, to cut other stones. They had a lot of time on their hands you see, since they had no TV.
