It was meant to detour crime and keep civilizations controlled with fear of the unknown and unseen. But Mythology sometimes does correspond with reality in lots of ways.

I'm not sure what you mean, because I don't find it scary. Do you mean, why are so many of the stories in standard myths violent or somehow twisty? Like poor Promethius suffering for stealing fire, or Persephone being kidnapped away by Hades? If that's the case, my theory is that the stories of the gods were entertainment as well as religion, and just as good soap operas need drama, so do good myths. Also, ancient people lived in far harsher times, with a much higher mortality rate and far less medical technology, and so the violent stories matched their more violent world.
If you mean a broader definition of mythology, like vampires and werewolves--well, the scary part of those (according to Jungians) are a safe way for us to face real fears (such as fear of death or of man's bestiality) through "fictions." But a lot of those kinds of myths are also about faeries and Santa Clause... so it's not all scary.

I think it may be your perspective. I don't think it's scary. However, there are some stories in it that could be seen as scary. Many of the stories were meant to teach a lesson and like the original Grimm's Fairy Tales, had some frightening elements. A good example would be the story of Oedipus Rex and his daughter/sister Antigone. Also, I guess to a small child, the kidnapping of Persephone by Hades and subsequent events could be scary.

Mythology is simply the study of the myths (i.e. the stories) of ours and other cultures. Not all are, but scary seems to sell the best.

A lot of mythology is about retribution and destruction and the idea of a great power, willing to destroy all in a fleeting moment, does not give one comfort.

What's so scary about it? If you mean the gods and godesses and what they did, look around. A lot scarier stuff going on in the world today for sure.
