Because 90% of the posters here are kids who either use a self-described shorthand ("u" instead of "you") and don't care what it looks like, or who just can't type or spell.

For the ones who should know how, they just don't want to put the effort into practicing proper grammar. They also seem to forget all it would take to make them look a wee bit smarter would be to use the spellcheck feature that Yahoo provides them!

School are also getting very lax lately in teaching today's children proper grammar, spelling, writing, pretty much anything really. Writing looks like chicken scratch most of the time, and when you finally make out what they wrote all you can think is "He's in 7th grade and can't spell this?".

And it's not isolated to one child who could have a learning disability because it happens all too often.

As for the others, they don't know our grammar or spelling system because they are from other countries or just learning the language.

Because they're lazy. I use correct punctuation, but if the person asking the question says something like "if u had 1 fing to say 2 sum1 dead wot wud u say'', the chances are, I'll reply by saying things without good grammar. I can't be bothered if they can't. Another reason is because 90% of the people on here should be at work, but don't have a job because of bad grammar and spelling and such I expect. Do you see the reasoning? x

In addition to some of the answers given, kids do a lot of text messaging and have learned quite a bit of "shorthand" slang, so some of the misspelling is actually intentional.

The problem is this sometimes spills over into real life and their grammar suffers.

That said, 90% sounds high. It depends on the category and the question, I believe.

Have you ever checked the spelling and grammar of some teachers? Look closely the next time you get a note from one of them. Most of the schools where I live no longer stress spelling and grammar as part of the "English" lesson. You are better off teaching your kid as a reinforcement.

As a general rule, people's grammar and spelling skills began sliding with the dominance of the Internet. Instead of writing long, thought-out letters, people are shooting off quick e-mails. This effect is amplified in a setting such as Yahoo!Answers, since it is itself a quick-fire medium for communication.

Because most of the people are lazy and do not use the check spelling button right above where I am writing. A lot of kids are using either slang or shorthand, like u for you and r for are.

I contribute the poor writing skills to the use of abbreviations used in email and the lack of importance put on grammar in English classes. If you are concerned about grammar, you would be in shock if you were a teacher and the lost discipline of penmanship.
