Ok, if you are using IE, I think you can go into Tools, then Options, then Security and actually type in the sites that you do not want your son to visit. There is an area where you can 'adjust' what level of security you want the laptop to have on the internet. Things he is studying for school should be accessible to him if you have a higher setting on the security.

Hope this helps...

If you put a content filtering firewall on the laptop then you can make his porn surfing a bit more difficult *providing* you didn't give him admin rights and you are running win2000 / winXP... but there are ways round most of these if he really wants to go looking.

The other way is to ... make him connect by a dedicated firewall instead of directly to the internet from your house and log where he goes and review the logs... and threaten him with some dire punishment if he transgresses. Like 'no cookies for a diay' or 'castration' depending how firm you need to be.

But like others said... he can just up and take it elsewhere to surf porn.

You can get filtering software. But to be honest, If your kid has half a brain, which I'm sure he does, he's going to be able to figure out a way around them. Never underestimate them.

I raised 4 kids, we always had computers. My advice: don't trust them, don't trust anything. Don't let your kid on the internet unless an adult is present. I never had an internet connected computer to be in a bedroom in private. Sure they had one in there, to play games on, but it had no modem. If my kids got on the internet, it was the computer in the living room and only if I or their mother allowed it. The computer was BIOS password protected and turned off if we were not in the room. If that sounds draconian to some, I'm sorry. I call it being a responsible parent.

You don't, I'm afraid. He will easily get around this.

There are a few ISPs (like AOL) that censor the Internet but all he has to do is plug it in to a mates connection and he has full access. The only way to be sure is o sit with him but that is impractical.

this is very difficult.
the only thing u can do reasonably is to put parental controls on.

but from experience it is highly likely that he will still be
able to access unsuitable material.
the only way to safeguard against it is to
try to make sure that he does not have access
when u r not able to supervise.

the first point means that u will have to create 2 accounts
with urs being the main one.

also and here is a secret tip!!
if u install norton systemworks premier
u can check up on his browsing!
it's funny how well that one works!!!

He will figure out a way to get to some of the porn sites. Just take that laptop away from him until he turns 21.

If the computer is running Xp or XP pro you can set yourself up as the administrator and give limited access to the computer, and he won't be able to change the settings if you use a password.
Hope this helps.

if your child is under 12. it shouldn't matter. I used to use AOL though so if you've got that it will be much better cos you can personalise. use your internet anti-virus software to block sites. it'll be so clear you'll be able to do it in a few clicks.
