Nearly all my downloaded videos decided to stop working recently, every time I attempt to open them on various media players, I get the message, or variations on the message: 'This is not a movie file', or 'bad command of volume control' or something. They ARE movie files, why has my computer suddenly decided they're not? And how do I fix it?

if you downloaded them in bittorrent or some similar P2P program (like limewire) , make sure they are 100% done before you open them.

if not to solve your playback issues

download a codec pack. i recommend:
CCCP - http://www.cccp-project.net/

these will help you play quicktime .mov's and real video .rmvb's
