Why is it that people let their animals run free? There are so many dangers in this. People dislike stray cats and harm them. Dogs get poisoned and ran over by cars, and the list goes on. It really doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Keep in mind, in the country there are dangers also.

As for friendly neighbors who have cats too. What if your cat goes beyond that neighbor. Cats do like to roam and discover the unknown.

Definitely not! Most places have leash laws for dogs. Even if they were not in place, too many hazards for beloved pets. It breaks my heart to see animals on the loose. Too many times they get run over, abused or lose their way home If you love your animals, don't let them run loose!

Cats are different than dogs. I'd say no though. Would you allow your children to run unrestrained? I love dogs but personally I don't like other dogs running around in my yard, messing in my yard, and barking all the time. I am very aware of that so I do not let my dog do that so she is not becoming a nuisance. We also have ordinances in our community that prohibit loose dogs and dogs that bark to loudly and excessively.

Inside when I'm not home for a long period of time, my dog is in her 'area'. This is for her own safety. She sometimes likes to chew power cords. We also have a bay window that she thinks she should jump up into. I'm afraid she will fall and get hurt. I also don't want her choking on something my kids left lay somewhere in the house that was not picked up.

Why a cat should be kept indoors:

1. Parasites
2. Other animals
3. Disease
4. Cruel people
5. Cars

A responsible cat owner does not let a cat wander free..period. ALL animal societies agree with this including the Humane society and the ASPCA.

Obedience training might grant help to out plenty. There are some hassle-free how you are able to discourage this habit. i in my view prefer to apply time-outs (in basic terms like human beings do with their teenagers). I also have a crate and each time our dogs chases the cats we are saying "timeout" in a annoying voice staggering away. Then positioned him contained in the crate. We then leave the room for an extraordinarily little while (like 10 seconds). Then we come back contained in the room, tell him he's a extraordinary boy, and enable him out. additionally, we attempt to grant our dogs procedures of succeeding and not entering into hassle. while the cat is obtainable contained in the room and all of us comprehend the dogs is approximately to chase, we get the canines interest and play with him or provide him treats staggering away until eventually now he chases. This teaches him that as quickly as he sees the cat, if he comprises us, we are able to reward him. He has caught on notably at present that chasing the cat in basic terms potential he would be faraway from the placement and forced to be left on my own and bored. If he's large and leaves the kitty on my own, then he can stay out and play with us and get treats. that's worked extremely properly for us. in basic terms in basic terms be sure you're a hundred% consistent. while you're no longer around to end the habit, then separate them.

And the world would be safer for you if you never left the house also and yet you don't stay cooped up all the time...

Actually my biggest reason to keep cats indoors is that they will kill any small creature they can. For the sake of the wild birds I keep the cat indoors.

Dogs are happy to stay inside so long as you take them out for a walk one in awhile. So no problem there.

I know what you mean. I was visiting some nice open wilderness (family friend lives out in the mountains) when her neighbor's cat was mauled by a dog.

In dog parks and on your own property ok but seriously...roaming on their own....

I live in the suburbs....where I see a LOT of dead cats. No they weren't poisoned....they weren't mauled....but all their guts are hanging out due to cars.

My friend lives in sort of a country area (9 acres) and well....his little kitten died from all the fleas on it.
