Either the Linkage from the shifter has come loose, or the Selector Fork INSIDE the transmission has come loose or Broken!

between the 2 transmissions that GM uses in there midsize cars , you have the better of the 2. the other is the 4l60. it is a piece of sh**. you need a transmission.

you didn't mention the mileage. you 2-4 band either popped off it's cleet, or its burnt . the 2-4 servo pushes on the band to hold the drum from spinning giving you 2nd but if the band is not holding,then it's not going to shift..... the transmission thas to be taken apart & inspected.

because you need your transmission reuilt has become bad is a common problem
