There's a little debate, so there's a little latitude in dates. But basically it's thought to be in either the months of August or September somewhere between the years 12 BC - 3 AD. From the evidence I've seen and the consensus of the theologians and historians, it would seem the year 6 BC is the one that most lean towards because of the appearance of a super nova and a series of other events that appear to be reiterated in the Bible that are verified elsewhere.
The one thing that is in dispute is the passage from Luke where it says there was a census called and which serves as the reason for Joseph and Mary traveling to Bethlehem. The one thing all scholars agree upon is that no such census was ever called. So that's a misleading passage.

Does anyone actually know for sure? There have been so many arguements and debates about this subject so we can't possibly know which one is true. Also this story of Jesus' birth has been repeated many times in different parts of the world throughout history, with not Jesus as the main character but another 'messiah.' I don't know much about the subject but I know one example of a greek myth, made before Jesus was supposed to have been born. A child was born, people came to him following a star, believing he was the saviour of us all and stuff like that. Ok my little answer will not really be accepted as reliable. Hey I'm only fourteen! But this is what I have heard. Sorry this doesn't answer the question at all does it? oh well im just sharing my opinion.

Skeptics doubt that Jesus really existed, for he is mentioned only in the New Testament and by a few Jewish writers who copy it, eg Flavius Josephus. Being mentioned in the records of many lands is more proof that someone actually existed, as is true of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar or Charlemagne. King Arthur, Achilles and Jesus are more doubtful. If he was born, it was in Herod's reign, ie some say 4BCE or so. He was born in warm weather, not the first of winter. Modern Xmas is a borrowing of ealier Winter Soltice festivals, especially the Roman Saturnalia. As you see, your question cannot be answered precisely.
