Lungfishes (Sarcopterygii, Dipnoi), along with the coelacanth, are considered to be the most primitive living fishes. There are three families and six species. Four species are found in the family Protopteridae (African lungfishes) and one species each in Ceratodontidae (Australian lungfish) and Lepidosirenidae (South American lungfish) As to why they are found in these areas. They have developed traits to survive in these evolutionary niches. In most of these areas they have very harsh conditions to survive, as in African lungfish which lives through the dry season rolled into a mud ball and breath air by keeping its lips on the outside of the ball. Being more like ells than fish they have the ability to live in the low oxygen swamp areas were they are found by breathing air and not getting their oxygen from water. This gives the lungfishes an ecological advantage to regular fish in this habitat.
